The Background

Seems crazy to go to the Middle East now, right? Mark's been wanting to go to Israel/Palestine for a long time. He was there once before--25 years ago! But this summer his synagogue, Sha'ar Zahav, is planning a GLBT tour to Israel on the occasion of the First Annual World Gay Pride march in Jerusalem.

You probably heard about it in the news: many of the ultra-Orthodox rabbis (and leaders of other religious sects, let's not discriminate here) had a fit over the notion of queers partying-it-up in the holy city. And hey, I'm a little weirded out by the idea, too. Didn't people there used to stone women for adultery? And the Christian Orthodox priests will have better drag than anything I can fit in my luggage.

On the other hand, maybe it will unite the Islamists and the ultra-Orthodox Jews against a common cause. Imagine peace in the Middle East because of Gay Pride!

We'll be traveling from July 31st until we return on August 13th. World Pride is the second week, the march being on Thursday,
August 10th. Pride activities will continue through the weekend.
